Press Conference at the National Press Club

ROOT will announce the organized efforts of a number of organizations, to include, media, celebrities, sports figures, politicians, and individuals, to ask for a Moratorium Against Homicides in honoring slain homicide victims and their family members; to announce efforts to register voters in alliance with Russell Simmons and the Hip Hop Summit Action Network; to kickoff the first major orchestrated campaign against gun violence targeted specifically towards the urban environment – Guns Aside.

Working Session at the University of the District of Columbia

DYNAMICS OF MURDER AND VIOLENCE IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

John L. Johnson, Ed.D, Convener

Co-hosted by the University of the District of Columbia and the National Alliance for Change

A gathering of individual citizens, representatives of projects, organizations, churches, media, law enforcement, government officials, and other institutions, all concerned about the violent trends in Washington, DC and who want to play a positive role in changing the status quo, as well as seeking solutions.  Open space format will be used for the gathering and seating is limited to 50 participants

 

ROOT 2nd Annual Father’s Day Awards Banquet 

     6:30 pm - 1 am

The Black-tie dinner will honor fathers who have made a difference in the community and commemorate victims and families who have suffered from crime and violence.  The event will bring together members of many of the local and national organizations dedicated to stopping the violence.  Local leaders will be honored for their commitment to the community and to the cause.  Musical entertainment provided by Guest Recording Artists, The Delfonics.  Cocktail Hour meet and greet beginning at 6:30 pm.

Hosted by East of the River Clergy Police Community Partnership; sponsored by HOBO, Hypnosis, and Madness

To help graduating males focus on life and career after high school, and community involvement.  Workshops will include influence of music on culture and identity.

Stop The Violence Concert  

4 pm - 11 pm

ROOT, the National Alliance for Change, and The Hip-Hop Summit Action Network will hold a Stop the Violence, Stop the Murders and Register to Vote late afternoon concert for D.C. youth at the Tunnel Night Club.  Over 2000 youth are expected to come out to the Tunnel Nightclub for a rally and concert.  Youth will hear from respected celebrities and community leaders about how violence is affecting our community and individual families, remember and honor their slain friends, and the importance of registering to vote.

June 20, 2004 : Sunday

2nd Annual Father’s Day Rally at Freedom Plaza  

1 pm - 4 pm

For the second year, ROOT, along with No Murders DC, Cease Fire Don’t Smoke the Brothers, and Parents of Murdered Children, D.C. Chapter will ask our community and our City to gather downtown at Freedom Plaza, directly across from the John Wilson Building and one block away from the White House, and in the direct view of the Capitol, where government officials make decisions regarding the lives of our residents.  During the day there will be a series of awards ceremonies, safety presentations, speakers, and survivor testimonies.  The closing ceremony will be a candlelight vigil in memory of the victims of homicide and their families.
