NOBLE/MPD Youth Town Hall Summit on Violence

Date: Saturday, March 29, 2008, from 10:00 am - 12 noon

Location: St. Thomas More Catholic Church

Panel members will consist of:

DC Parks and Recreation Dept.
DC Employment Services Dept.
DC Superior Court ( Associate Judge Anita Josey-Herring)
R.O.O.T. (CEO Kenneth Barnes)
MPD (Asst. Chief Diane Groomes) 
Youth representatives

Moderators/Facilitators: DJ Rico (WPGC), "Big G" (HBO's "The Wire"),
and Milton Creagh (Motivational Speaker and Atlanta Radio Personality)

From noon to 4 pm, following the Youth Summit on Violence, there will
be lunch and then several workshops dealing with Teen Pregnancy,
Personal Hygene, Drug Abuse, Car Theft, and children will have a
chance to sign-up for summer jobs and youth programs through the DC
Department of Employment Services and DC Department of Parks and
Recreation.

Title of Event:  KNOCKING OUT GUN VIOLENCE - Ladies Night Out

Date: Sat., Feb 2, 2008

Time: 12noon - 6:00pm

Who: ROOT Inc., The Washington Area Ladies, Supreme Defense Metropolitan Clubhouse, DC Parks and Recreation, Family & Medical Counseling Service, Inc., Capital City Champs, Two Time World Champion Lisa Foster, Potomac Valley Association, Douglass Jr. High School, Malcolm X Elementary School, Unity Healthcare, WPFW 89.3 FM, and the Neighborhood Investment Fund.

What: Knocking Out Gun Violence II is a free community boxing event to promote the ROOT message of GUNS ASIDE by "Knocking Out Gun Violence" with an all female boxing card.  This event is a second in a continuous series.

Title of Event: Spirit in Action Live Broadcast

Collaborating Organizations: WPFW and Anacostia Senior High School

Description: In commemoration of ROOT Inc.’s one year anniversary of hosting Sprit in Action on WPFW 89.3 FM and its 3rd Annual Guns Aside Month ROOT will do a live broadcast at an assembly in Anacostia.  Four seniors will moderate the discussion with their peers around topics of youth public safety, school safety, youth violence, and community violence. 

 

Title of Event: Happy Hour Benefit for Guns Aside Month

Collaborating Organizations: Maceo Thomas and Staci Gorden Hosts

Description: First Tuesdays is a unique event that brings DC area youth service providers, young entrepreneurs, and other socially conscious folks together to network.  The owners of JoJo’s wholly support the building of relationships to better our community and have offered to donate proceeds of sales from 6:00 to 8:30pm to ROOT Inc.

 

Title of Event: DC Council Youth Hearing

Date: January 12, 2008

Collaborating Organizations: Committee on Youth, Councilman Vincent C. Gray, Chairman

Description: Washington, DC City Council Chairman Vincent Gray Committee of the Whole has convened a hearing to tackle the concerns of DC youth. ROOT Inc. will have Anacostia and Cardozo Senior High School students testifying about issues related to school safety and youth public safety.

 

Title of Event: Teens Count 2008 Fashion Battle

Date: January 19, 2008

Time: 6:30pm – 10pm

Location: DAR Constitution Hall

Collaborating Organizations: Teens Count

Description: Teens Count has invited ROOT Inc. to become a sponsor and event partner for the 4th Annual Teens Count 2008 Fashion Battle.  The event, presented for the third year, features students who are mostly from Prince George's County, and aims to foster such characteristics as good sportsmanship and positive self-image. Tracy M. Cooper founded the fashion battle, presented annually during the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. She said she wanted to give teenagers a more creative

way to express themselves.  "I started this based on the need for quality programs in our community," Cooper said, "These kids need a healthy activity in a safe environment. They want to come out."  Cooper came up with a name for the event and secured non-profit status. She has found venues to host the shows and people to help produce them. Students themselves audition the models and choreographers, and they find or design and make the clothes.

 

Title of Event: Guns Aside Month Poetry Showcase

Collaborating Organizations: Royal Alliance Music Group

Description: As a part of its Guns Aside Month fundraising initiatives, ROOT, Inc. plans to launch a poetry slam/showcase on January 25th 2008. ROOT has been recognized and revered for its ongoing efforts in the Washington, DC/ Metropolitan area as it pertains to penetrating the message of non-violence. As a result of such influence, this event will give artists the opportunity to positively execute their talents and influence in an area plagued with an influx of death and destruction.

Collaborating Organizations: DC Parks and Recreation

Description: ROOT Inc. in collaboration with DC Parks and Recreation is proud to present the second in a series of community boxing events entitled “Knocking Out Gun Violence.”  This event is geared to bring the community out for fanfare and entertainment while relaying the message of ROOT Inc.’s program Guns Aside that stands for anti gun violence and anti youth violence.  Boxing is a tool to be utilized to teach focus and comradeship in a controlled arena and is proven to be an effective aggression reducer among youth.

 

Title of Event: “Black History Month: Educate Yourself Stop the Gun Violence”

Date: February 3, 2008

Time: 10pm – 3am

Location: 9:30 Club, Washington, DC

Description: We will be holding a benefit concert with hip-hop and R& B artist  as part of the Guns Aside Benefit Concerts (TBD, Common, Lupe Fiasco, John Legend, Raheem DeVaughn, JHoliday, or India Arie).
